Product Announcement: Ortofon-Serato S-120

The brand new Ortofon-Serato S-120 sees two of the world’s finest manufacturers of DJ technology unite for the first time to create a pick-up cartridge of unprecedented specification. The S-120 embodies the combination of experience and ‘accuracy in sound’ that Ortofon are famous for, with the forward-thinking and famously stable technology of Serato’s Digital Vinyl System, Scratch Live.

In the ever-present age of DVS, no manufacturer has yet looked to optimise the first ‘link in the chain’ of pick-up cartridge technology in any dramatically new ways. However, the Ortofon-Serato project has set to change that with technology that, even outside of DVS usage, has created one of the most impressively spec’d DJ cartridges on the market.

The revolutionary, patented design boasts a number of technological breakthroughs, which the whole spectrum of vinyl-based DJs can benefit from; most notably of which is the development of an all-new asymmetric suspension technology. The development of this technology has allowed for an amazing amount of vertical rigidity – translating as less vinyl-skip – while at the same time increasing the horizontal tracking ability to levels never before accomplished – allowing for higher levels of musical detail and anti-skate. This latter success is manifest in the form of a massive 120µm (micro-metres) tracking ability, whereas all before it have traditionally been around 80 µm. Now DJs can scratch, rewind, cue and track with unrivalled accuracy.

Another breakthrough includes an increased capacity for reduced vinyl wear. The exceptional tracking ability of the S-120 allows for even the loudest record-pressings to be played at a bare minimum of tracking force (down to 1.5 grams), keeping record wear as limited as possible. This makes the cartridge highly adept at playing traditional vinyl for both DJing and listening purposes. Also because of the asymmetric technology, there is almost no need for an extended set-up and calibration process. The S-120’s performance is unrestricted by excess tracking force, greatly reducing the need to adjust it during a live gig.

Finally, the Ortofon-Serato S-120 is the ideal cartridge for playing back timecoded vinyl. The output voltage is at a high 10.0 mV (mili-volts), allowing for increased timecode performance at a high signal-to-noise ratio, especially when used with the SL1 and SL3 audio interfaces.

The Ortofon-Serato S-120 is truly set to be one of the finest examples of DJ Technology to have come out of NAMM 2010. The design revolutionises and modernises pick-up cartridge technology in line with the ever-digitising world of vinyl-based DJing.

The cartridge will be available in both Concorde and OM forms, with the OM version also being supplied with a custom-designed Serato headshell. As with all Ortofon models, there will also be stylus replacements available. The cartridge is due for UK release in February.

Blessed with natural musical talent and the uncanny ability to nurture her gift through a relentless pursuit of inspiration, Sista Stroke is an emerging force in modern underground music. Her musical roots grow deep and span across the boundaries of genre and geography. She is a child of the b-boy generation whose journey though life has included living in Houston, San Antonio, Panama, McLean (VA), most recently Chicago, with a stop over in Los Angeles, and now London, England. The rich cultural textures of these cities reverberate in her music.
Sista Stroke came up musically as a member of the legendary Rebel Crew,a musical family founded in Houston in the mid 80s by Joe B. and Rick Partida. As part of the Rebel Crew she played styles ranging from Hip Hop to Dance Hall, Jungle to Jazz, and Breaks to House always remaining anchored in soulful music. Her skills did not go unnoticed and she soon developed a following which called her to the road. In virtually no time Sista Stroke developed a hardcore fan base in cities around the United States, England and Mexico. She is known for beatin it hard, yet strokin' the soul with an incredibly moving blend of deep, funky, and spiritual house music (however, she has more than just house in her arsenal). She has often been booked to open for various acts, ranging from house to hip-hop, such as Afrika Bambaattaa, The Executioners, Tortured Soul, King Britt, Derrick Carter, Joey Beltram, Donald Glaude, DJ Dan, Method Man, Boo Williams, Mark Farina, Kaskade, and Super Jane (Lady D, Colette, Dayhota, and DJ Heather).
However, she has now become a headliner herself through consistency in her DJing and a growing discography.
As a producer, Sista Stroke has found a place musically where she can truly explore the depths of her creativity. In 2004 she became the preeminent in-house producer/remixer for Mother Tongue and Innuendo Records. Over the past five years she has released records on Mother Tongue, D'Lectable Rec, Privat Box, Dusttrax, and Hook-Up Tunes to name a few, along with some of the most sought after white labels in the industry. Through her original creations and remix work, Sista Stroke has made a name for herself in underground music. She is now poised to make her mark on the industry with projects on Revolutionary Music as well as several other lucky labels. Her releases on Revolutionary Music range from House to Hip Hop to down-tempo.

Very into simplicity these days. They come in lots of colors as well, I'm into the gray but there's a bunch of dope ones.

I had the pleasure of attending a Redbull Music Academy lecture with Peter Hook this past weekend. It was the experience of a lifetime! He's such a funny charming amazing man and it was so great to hear stories from the past 30 years. Joy Division and New Order are two of my favorite bands in the world and their music is a huge influence so it was an amazing experience. Last night I saw Pilot's friend Lyndell Montgomery perform with Chris Pureka and was super impressed. I haven't seen great musicians play from that close up in a very long time and had chills the entire performance...It was really pretty amazing. I'm pretty open to any music that will move me even if it's completely different to what I do, and this was really inspiring. Also the opener Nicole Reynolds had the craziest voice totally out of a different era, really really cool. Check them out!
